What Copran Zri is
Whitepeaks Dental Solutions GmbH is based in Hamminkeln, Germany, and makes the Copran family of presintered zirconia blanks. Copran Zri is the original, single-shade member of that family; the multilayer CopraSupreme and the more translucent CopraSmile are separate products with their own data and are not covered on this page. The product label on the maker’s disc images carries the Tosoh mark, the Japanese zirconia powder supplier.
The FDA 510(k) summary K232952 classifies Copran Zri as 3Y-TZP, a tetragonal zirconia that meets ISO 6872:2015 Type II Class 5. It belongs to the classic, strength-oriented generation of zirconia rather than to the more translucent cubic-phase materials, and it is used for both full-contour restorations and frameworks.
These are the Copran Zri versions and their key values:
| Version | Coloring | Flexural strength (IFU) |
| Copran Zri white | None; colored with liquid before sintering | about 1,400 MPa |
| Copran Zri light, medium, intense | Preshaded in three intensities | about 1,250–1,400 MPa |
Composition, strength and translucency
The Whitepeaks instructions for use and technical data sheet (revision 17) give the composition of Copran Zri as zirconia balanced with 4.95–5.35% yttrium oxide and 0.15–0.35% aluminium oxide, with iron oxide at up to 0.01% in the white disc and 0.04–0.25% in the preshaded discs. Density after final sintering is 6.05 g/cm³ for both.
The FDA 510(k) summary reports the results of testing to ISO 6872:2015: flexural strength 1,400 MPa, fracture toughness 5 MPa·m½ and chemical solubility 6.7 µg/cm² for both the white and the preshaded discs. Biocompatibility was assessed to ISO 10993-1:2018.
The coefficient of thermal expansion is given as 10.5 ± 0.5 × 10⁻⁶/K (25–500 °C) per the IFU, while the 510(k) summary lists 10.2 × 10⁻⁶/K. The IFU value is the one to use when choosing a veneering ceramic; Whitepeaks states that any commercial veneering ceramic designed for zirconia frameworks can be used.
Whitepeaks does not publish a translucency percentage for Copran Zri, so we do not quote one. What the IFU does say is that a speed sintering program should not be used when maximum translucency is wanted, and it provides a separate translucency program. If esthetics in the anterior region is the main goal, a more translucent zirconia or lithium disilicate may be the better choice; for the differences between zirconia generations, see 3Y-TZP vs 5Y-PSZ zirconia.
Indications and limits
The two official documents describe the indication for Copran Zri differently, so both are given here.
- Per the IFU (revision 17): crowns and bridges of up to 16 units, with no more than two pontics between two crowns in the posterior region and no more than four between two crowns in the anterior region, as well as veneers, inlays, onlays, primary telescopes and bar constructions. Full-contour restorations and copings or frameworks for later veneering are both covered.
- Per the FDA 510(k) summary K232952: a shorter indication, namely full ceramic crowns, onlays, three- and four-unit bridges and inlay bridges in the anterior and molar regions.
The IFU is the manufacturer’s working document; the 510(k) summary describes the indication reviewed by the FDA. When you plan a bridge of more than four units, please keep this difference in mind and state the span clearly on the prescription. The IFU lists two contraindications: known hypersensitivity to any of the components, and insufficient space for the restoration.
Design minimums from the IFU
Copran Zri only reaches its rated strength if the restoration has enough material. The IFU sets these minimums, all measured after final sintering:
- Wall thickness: at least 0.5 mm for anterior teeth and 0.6 mm for posterior teeth.
- Connector between two anterior crowns: at least 8 mm².
- Connector between an anterior crown and a pontic, two posterior crowns, or two anterior pontics: at least 9 mm².
- Connector between a posterior crown and a pontic, or two posterior pontics: at least 12 mm².
- Bar constructions: a cross-section of at least 15 mm².
If the scan shows that the preparation or the interocclusal space does not leave room for these values, our CAD team flags it at the design stage, before the disc is milled.
Sintering, shades and disc sizes
The IFU gives four sintering programs for the Copran group. All end with unregulated cooling in the closed furnace:
- Normal: 10 °C per minute to 950 °C, then 6 °C per minute to 1,500 °C, hold 90 minutes.
- Slow: 5 °C per minute to 950 °C, then 2 °C per minute to 1,500 °C, hold 120 minutes.
- Translucency: 5 °C per minute to 950 °C, then 2 °C per minute to a final temperature between 1,500 and 1,630 °C, hold 120 minutes.
- Speed: 50 °C per minute to 1,100 °C, then 20 °C per minute to 1,500 °C, hold 30 minutes; not recommended where maximum translucency is wanted.
Before sintering, the IFU recommends cleaning the milled restoration briefly in distilled water in an ultrasonic bath and drying it fully, without letting the water boil, to avoid cracks. After sintering, any adjustment is done by wet grinding with diamond instruments; sintered diamonds, corundum stones and carbide cutters should not be used, and overheating must be avoided.
- White disc: shade is built with the Copran Color liquids before sintering, following their own instructions.
- Preshaded discs: three intensities, light, medium and intense, for a base tooth color without liquid coloring.
- Disc sizes: 95 mm and 98 mm diameter, 10 to 25 mm thick (FDA 510(k) summary).
If a shade or disc is not available for your case, we will tell you before production and agree the timing or an alternative.
Ordering Copran Zri restorations from Khai Nguyen
Zirconia crowns and bridges take 2–4 working days in the lab; zirconia on implants takes 3–4.5 working days depending on the number of units. Overseas cases then ship by DHL, which usually takes 2–4 days. More on timing in Vietnam dental lab turnaround time and shipping.
With the case, please state:
- The restoration type, tooth numbers and, for bridges, the number of units and pontics.
- That you want Copran Zri, or let us choose the material.
- The VITA shade, the stump shade and shade photos if available.
- Whether the restoration is full-contour or a framework for veneering.
- Your cementation protocol, so that we can set the cement space.
Restorations are covered by our general warranty (6 months to 15 years depending on the material). To compare with other zirconia, see Luxen, IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime, Ceramill Zolid and DMax Natura, or browse all the zirconia blanks we work with. To discuss a case, please contact Khai Nguyen or follow our ordering process.
